A Travellerspoint blog

The "Eastern Realm" has been off the travel plans for quite a few years.

When I lived near Brno in the Czech Republic it was my "go to" place as I could buy an English newspaper every so often to keep up with events. My only other form of contact with the country of my birth was through letters from my partner and friends! It also gave me an opportunity to get out on the bike and go for a longer ride.

So this year, Austria is back in the plans. Actually, it is on the way back from the Czech Suzuki Owners Club Rally in Vernířovice in Northern Moravia.

It's planned as a one night stay. When the rally finishes on Sunday, a couple of friends, Phil and Giles, and myself will set off for the UK. Our current plan is to head to Brno to drop in on a couple of friends from my teaching days, then south into Austria.

It is of course a roundabout route. Phil wanted to include a visit to Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria. So we planned a route that would take us into Austria, then near Vienna, and turn westwards towards Salzburg.

The route that was created in MyRouteApp actually passed nearby to Berchtesgaden, also in Bavaria but close to the border with Austria and Salzburg. So I added that to the route.

To make it a practical solution we needed a stop in Austria. In the end booking.com came up with a hotel in Lenzing. We are all booked in there. An early start after breakfast should see us arrive at Berchtesgaden before lunch. Time to have a look around at where Adolf Hitler (amongst many others!) spent his holidays!

Then onwards to Neuschwanstein. Ending the day in southern Germany. Nearer the time I will see if I can find places to stop along the route for breaks and anything scenic!
